The Best Hikes in and Around Argentière, Chamonix

The Chamonix Valley is one of the great hiking destinations in the Alps. With trails ranging from gentle valley walks to high-altitude mountain routes, there is something here for every level of hiker, whether you are visiting for the first time or coming back season after season.
This guide focuses on some of the best hikes accessible to beginner and intermediate hikers, including several trails that start directly from Argentière. For more on what the valley has to offer throughout the year, take a look at our guide to the best things to do in Chamonix all year round.
Lac Blanc
Lac Blanc is arguably the most iconic hike in the Chamonix Valley and a must for any visitor. Starting from the Flégère gondola above Les Praz, the trail climbs through alpine meadows and rocky terrain to a mountain lake sitting at 2,352 metres, with direct views across to the Mont Blanc massif. The return journey takes around two hours each way on the main track. It is classified as intermediate due to some elevation gain, but the path is well maintained and clearly signed. On a clear day, few hikes in the Alps offer views that come close.
Difficulty: Intermediate Starting point: Flégère gondola, Les Praz
Promenade de Lioutraz — Argentière to Les Praz

Starting from Argentière, the trail follows the Arve Valley along the Petit Balcon Sud, passing through forest and open meadows before reaching Les Praz. The terrain is gentle throughout and the views across the valley are consistently beautiful. It is a good first hike if you are settling in and finding your feet, and works well for mixed groups of all ages and fitness levels.

Argentière Loop via Le Planet and Montroc
A lovely local loop that takes in some of the best scenery around Argentière without requiring a gondola or significant elevation gain. The trail passes through forest, by the old Chapelle Protestante, up to the hamlet of Le Planet and on to Montroc, before returning to Argentière via Tre-le-Champ. Along the way there are open views, a dairy farm, picnic spots and the option to stop at La Crémerie du Glacier for lunch. One of the great classic routes in the valley, the Grand Balcon Nord runs along a high-level traverse above the Mer de Glace, with views up to the giant pinnacles of the Aiguilles and across to the Aiguilles Rouges on the opposite side of the valley. The route connects Montenvers to Plan de l'Aiguille and can be combined with the Montenvers train for an easier start. It is a longer and more committing day than the other routes listed here, but well within reach for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. One of the most rewarding walks in the valley.
